SHIATSU THERAPY You deserve to relax. It's good for you! by Matias Rozenberg Eastern healers have known for thousands of years what many modern medical practitioners are now beginning to accept as scientific fact: Not only is relaxation good for you, it is essential to your health. Health through relaxation and stress reduction can be achieved through shiatsu. Shiatsu, which translates literally as "finger pressure", was developed in Japan primarily by Masters Namikoshi and Masunaga in the last 100 years and is deeply rooted in Oriental healing methods dating back thousands of years. According to these healing methods, the human mind, body and spirit are seen as indivisible parts of a whole person. Shiatsu incorporates acupuncture theory, which states that Chi (or Ki) runs along various pathways throughout the body. These pathways are called meridians. A well-balanced flow of energy within these pathways is considered essential to one's health. The shiatsu therapist seeks to unblock imbalances in the flow of energy within a person by using various techniques. Techniques employed by shiatsu therapists incorporate various stretches, as well as the application of comfortable thumb pressure. A shiatsu therapist may also use his or her elbows or knees in a treatment. Furthermore, when the therapist views the client from a place of caring and compassion, shiatsu becomes a meditative art form for the practitioner and a deeply enjoyable and nurturing experience for the client. While shiatsu is relaxing and pleasant, it can also relieve physical ailments and bring about healing on a mental, emotional and spiritual level. Essentially, it sets the body's self-curative powers to work. The release of tension and the creation of deep relaxation effected by the sessions gradually strengthen the body's resistance to disease. Shiatsu is regarded as a respected complimentary medicine and can help diminish future health problems. Conditions which most often bring clients to see shiatsu therapists include physical aches, (eg. back, neck, shoulders pains), digestive problems, headaches and problems relating to stress. People also go to shiatsu for a general 'health tune-up' and, last but not least, for pleasure. When receiving a shiatsu treatment, loose fitting clothes are recommended (eg. sweatpants, T-shirt, etc). ©2002-2006 Redhawk Healing Arts Unauthorized reproduction prohibited.
