Shiatsu Therapy: You deserve to relax. It's good for you!
    by Matias Rozenberg

Eastern healers have known for thousands of years what many modern medical practitioners are now beginning to accept as scientific fact: Not only is relaxation good for you, it is essential to your health.

Health through relaxation and stress reduction can be achieved through shiatsu.

Shiatsu, which translates literally as "finger pressure", was developed in Japan primarily by Masters Namikoshi and Masunaga in the last 100 years and is deeply rooted in Oriental healing methods dating back thousands of years. According to these healing methods, the human mind, body and spirit are seen as indivisible parts of a whole person.

Shiatsu incorporates acupuncture theory, which states that Chi (or Ki) runs along various pathways throughout the body. These pathways are called meridians. A well-balanced flow of energy within these pathways is considered essential to one's health. The shiatsu therapist seeks to unblock imbalances in the flow of energy within a person by using various techniques.

Techniques employed by shiatsu therapists incorporate various stretches, as well as the application of comfortable thumb pressure. A shiatsu therapist may also use his or her elbows or knees in a treatment. Furthermore, when the therapist views the client from a place of caring and compassion, shiatsu becomes a meditative art form for the practitioner and a deeply enjoyable and nurturing experience for the client.

While shiatsu is relaxing and pleasant, it can also relieve physical ailments and bring about healing on a mental, emotional and spiritual level. Essentially, it sets the body's self-curative powers to work. The release of tension and the creation of deep relaxation effected by the sessions gradually strengthen the body's resistance to disease. Shiatsu is regarded as a respected complimentary medicine and can help diminish future health problems.

Conditions which most often bring clients to see shiatsu therapists include physical aches, (eg. back, neck, shoulders pains), digestive problems, headaches and problems relating to stress. People also go to shiatsu for a general 'health tune-up' and, last but not least, for pleasure.

When receiving a shiatsu treatment, loose fitting clothes are recommended (eg. sweatpants, T-shirt, etc).

    Psychotherapy!
    by Nancy Cronyn

When a person enters into the process of psychotherapy s/he is embarking on a journey into the five aspects of self: emotional, intellectual, physical, spiritual and sexual. People decide to go for psychotherapy when they are in crisis in relationships (with a spouse, work partner, children or parents), when they don't know what they want out of life, or when they feel "empty" or as if life is passing them by. It is extremely important that the client and the therapist are a "match". This means that the client feels very comfortable and safe with the therapist, so that they feel free enough to talk about their feelings openly. I also think it is important for the therapist to have had their own experience with therapy.

One does not have to be "crazy" or "nuts" to seek out professional help once in a while. My view of life is that we are here to learn about how and why we react to things the way we do, how to appreciate the differences in each other, and how to fully accept our humanity, both the darkness and the light.

Our North American society was built on a strong European foundation. That means there are a lot of rules about how to conduct oneself — be strong, be independent, don't rely on others, "children should be seen and not heard", people have to look a certain way to be considered attractive. What are some of the rules you were brought up with? These societal norms have a lot to do with how we are "molded" and learn to survive in the world.

Some of us grew up in families where each child assumed a role: the smart one, the athletic one, the pretty one, the black sheep, the clown. These roles denied the totality of who we are and sculpted us instead into what was desired. Children need to explore their world and make their own impressions, not be created into an image of what they are "supposed" to be.

As we grow up we interpret the world through our molding and sculpting by creating patterns or habits through which we make interpretations. When we encounter situations we go through an instant process of evaluation called a "three step dance" - 1) something happens, 2) we make an instantaneous interpretation of the event and, 3) we react. The instantaneous interpretation comes from all the past experiences we've had that may relate to this situation, it is not based in the moment. Each person will have a different reaction to the same situation thus creating the differences we see in our society.

The psychotherapeutic relationship is the basis for therapy. It is the model in which the client can be totally themselves, where they can practice new feelings, where they can find their own uniqueness and learn how to best utilize their own energy. I believe we all have our own patterns that keep us from intimacy and I show clients how to change the patterns that don't work. I act as a guide and an observer who will challenge and confront the issues presented. The work is done by the client.

I became a psychotherapist because I have been on my own journey and wish to guide others to such changes as I have experienced. At present my practice includes individual therapy sessions with men and women. I am an active member of the Ontario Society of Psychotherapists and I facilitate group sessions for people with sexually transmitted diseases.
